You can use a combination of merging, and refining to re-patch an area with an arrangement of faces that is more conducive to you desired results.
  
An important point to understand is that while they do opposite functions Merge and Refine are not direct inverses. In other words one does not undo the other.
This example is going from merging faces to refining faces.
